Commissioning of the Sande railway bypass, Friesland district

🚇Since the end of June 2022, the rail replacement service has been discontinued and the first trains of the Nord-West-Bahn have been running again for passenger services from Sande (Friesland) via Heidmühle and Jever to Esens (East Friesland). The railway line, which has been upgraded to two tracks, has a total length of 6.3 km. The construction section of the Sande railway bypass is a subsection of the major Oldenburg-Wilhelmshaven extension project and serves, among other things, to relieve congestion in the town of Sande. The upgrading will enable continuous double-track and electrified rail traffic for passengers and goods, including to the Jade-Weser Port. Construction work began in August 2018 and will be completed in June 2022. Full electrification is scheduled to take place by the end of 2022.

With the relocation of the line around the town of Sande, all level crossings in the original line area were removed. These have been replaced by bridges to enable free and safe travel for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. The old line is being completely dismantled. 🚉

In addition to the bridges, six culverts, 1.8 km of noise barrier and 2.5 km of vertical drainage (down to a depth of 12 m) were built. Three special construction methods were used: the ballast method, the deep roadway foundation and the geotextile installation.🚧

As a compensatory measure, Deutsche Bahn created almost 31 ha of compensation area with nesting boxes, amphibian passages and newly planted trees.

Many different companies were involved in the construction. Among others, Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft has been proudly represented in the ABS Oldenburg-Wilhelmshaven for 9 years in the field of soil and material flow management within the scope of waste-related construction supervision in planning and execution. These services include, among other things, technical advice on waste-related issues, ensuring interface communication between the client, the construction company, operators and waste disposal companies, as well as the documentation and control of all mineral waste. In addition, MuP provides support in the electronic records procedure (eANV), carries out checks of various disposal-relevant documents and accompanies on-site collection measures.

Soil and waste management on construction sites has become increasingly important in recent years. Costs for the disposal of inert waste, such as soils, asphalt or construction debris, take up a considerable share of the total construction output in civil engineering measures. Mull und Partner also advocates the prioritised reuse of on-site excavation materials. We undertake the waste legal assessment for harmless reuse and develop soil management concepts to minimise lorry transports to and from the construction site. If the chemical or physical properties of the soils make local use impossible, we advise on proper disposal in treatment plants, recycling measures or landfills. We are happy to take over the documentation of the waste streams in accordance with legal regulations, also as the authorised representative of the waste producer. For this purpose, we use, among other things, the electronic verification procedure, which provides a particularly good overview and also offers a binding accounting basis with all parties involved in the disposal.✅

At the official commissioning ceremony of Deutsche Bahn on 27.06.2022, the company representative Ms Herbort opened the festivities. Afterwards, the Minister of the Environment Olaf Lies (Lower Saxony) and the District Administrator Sven Ambrosy (Friesland District) spoke.
